Put it online
One press in the Tofu builder publishes your app at its own address, after the same safety check every Tofu deploy passes. The app then lives in your Tofu dashboard like any other.
The button
Put it online is in the builder's top bar, ready once your app is running. You can also ask the agent to put it online, in any words: it offers a Put it online card in the chat, and the app goes online only when you press Put it online on that card. If the app changes after the card was made, that card can no longer be used.
What happens
A dialog says what your app gets: its own web address, a place in your Tofu account and, for an app that keeps data or signs people in, its own database and sign-in. Give the app a name (you can change it later in Tofu) and press Put it online. It can take a few minutes, and you can close the dialog: it keeps going.
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| Package your app | Sends your app's files to Tofu, leaving out dependencies, build output, .git and every .env file. |
| Set up the database | For an app that keeps data or signs people in: its own database, created only once the safety check passed. |
| Build it and put it online | Tofu builds the app and publishes it at its address. |
| Turn on sign-in | For an app that signs people in. |
An app that runs only in the browser shows the first and third steps. At the end, the dialog says Your app is online, with its name and address.
Tofu’s checks
Tofu's safety check runs first, before anything is sent. It stops code that would harm other people or Tofu, such as hidden or harmful code or a private key in a file. The dialog then says the check found something to fix, and that nothing has been sent; ask the agent to fix it.
Choices that risk only your own app, such as a table anyone with the link can change or a sign-in link left pointing at a developer's computer, come back as warnings, and warnings never stop it. A database is created only after the check passes, so a stopped version leaves none behind. It is the check every Tofu deploy passes (Deploy an app).
Free, Starter or Pro
An app goes online on Tofu's free hosting with the code behind its pages; the Free plan hosts one app at a time. For now, Put it online sends an app with a database or sign-in to a paid plan. The builder tells the two apart from the app's files.
When an app needs a paid plan, the dialog says so and offers Tofu's free trial, started on Tofu's own page in a new tab, or a paid plan. A version without its database or sign-in can still go online on Free.
The free trial lasts 7 days and takes a card on Stripe's checkout page: nothing is charged during the trial, and you can cancel anytime in Plan & billing. Taking real payments in your apps opens once the first month is paid. Prices are on the pricing page.
Size limits
| Limit | At most |
|---|---|
| Files | 500 |
| All files together | 1,536 KB (1.5 MB) |
| One file | 512 KB |
| A file's path | 200 characters |
Past a limit, nothing is sent, and the builder says which one: ask the agent to remove unused or large files.
The address
Your app goes online at its own Tofu address, <name>-<id>.trytofu.app, such as franks-kitchen-3f9a1c07b2e4.trytofu.app. Pressing Put it online again in the same app sends a new version of the same app, inside the same session. Your own domain is connected in the dashboard (Domains).
If it does not go online
The agent hears how it went, and once it settles tells you the address and what Tofu's checks found, without waiting for your next message.
- The build failed. The agent reads the end of the build log, with secrets masked, explains what went wrong and proposes the fix. Press Put it online again once it is fixed.
- The safety check stopped it. The agent lists the findings and fixes them when you ask, and asks first before changing a table you asked to be open.
After it is live
Your app is in Tofu.
Continue here
Keep changing the app in the builder, and put each new version online the same way.
Open in Tofu
Opens the app in your Tofu dashboard, in a new tab.
Use your own coding agent
A prompt to copy into any coding agent, which brings the app's code into a new folder with its first commit (With your own coding agent).
In the dashboard, the app has what every Tofu app has: versions, logs and rollback (Deploy an app), its keys (Environment variables), its database (Database), sign-in (Sign-in & email), payments (Payments), a domain of your own (Domains) and its traffic (Analytics).
Apps from your own agent or GitHub
Apps your own coding agent sent, or that you imported from GitHub, are listed in the builder's Your apps too. They open in the builder when they pass its checks, in this order:
- For an app that updates itself from GitHub, a card says the next push there can replace the changes you make in the builder, with Continue or Keep using GitHub.
- Tofu holds the app's code: code a coding agent sent, a ZIP or a GitHub import. Code sent as a folder Tofu does not keep, or linked to GitHub the older way, cannot be opened.
- The app is a static site or a Vite app.
- It fits Put it online's size: 500 files and 1.5 MB.
Putting such an app online from the builder replaces its code in Tofu, and for an app that updates from GitHub it pauses automatic updates (Automatic updates from GitHub).
What Put it online does not do
Go online by itself. An app goes online only when you press Put it online, on the top bar or on the agent’s card.
Put a database or sign-in online on Free. For now, Put it online sends an app that keeps data or signs people in to a paid plan. A version without its database or sign-in can go online on Free.
Send a large app. Past 500 files, 1.5 MB in all or 512 KB for one file, nothing is sent.
Roll back or connect a domain. Choosing which version is live, and connecting your own domain, are done in your Tofu dashboard.
